Porcelain Veneers, Laguna Beach
Porcelain Veneers, also known as “porcelain laminates”, are very thin custom-made porcelain coverings that fit over your existing teeth. Veneers are the most ideal way of improving your smile. A porcelain veneer can completely change the appearance of a tooth, and may even be an alternative to orthodontic treatment. When doing multiple teeth the results can be dramatic.
Dr. Boling has been placing porcelain veneers since 1980 and was integrally involved with designing tooth preparations and bonding mediums with such companies as 3M. Throughout the years, it has been procelain that has made the biggest change. Innovative companies, working with ceramists, are constantly improving the color and texture of porcelain. Thirty years ago, the veneers were hard and monochromatic. Today there are different types of porcelain and the ceramist is able to layer the colors from inside-out, thus creating a vital and life-like replica of “enamal”.
The Procedure
The procedure involves removing a thin layer of tooth structure off of the outer surface of the tooth or teeth. An impression is then taken of the teeth which is sent to the laboratory. Temporaries are then placed over the teeth while the veneers are fabricated. At a subsequent visit, the temporaries are removed and the veneers are placed on the teeth. The patient then evaluates the color and shape of the veneers. If everyone is happy, the veneers are then bonded into place.
Full Makeover
Dr. Boling starts with an in-depth consultation to determine each patient's individual aesthetic goals, taking into account facial structure, smile line, appearance and complexion. In some cases, patients actually meet the laboratory technician prior to beginning the case. A digital photograph will be taken of your teeth and with computer imaging, the patient and technician can actually select from hundreds of tooth shapes and colors to render a photographic image of the completed case before it is started.
Placing porcelain veneers is a combination of skill, artistry, and knowledge of the materials. Too often patients are disappointed with the look of their veneers that have been placed by dentists that have limited training or experience and the result are veneers that are monochromatic and look like “chicklets”.
Tooth preparation depends upon the desired end result. For example, if our goal is to move the mid-line, more tooth structure will be removed from one tooth than another. The angle and tilt of a tooth can completely change the appearance and even the color.
Dr. Boling uses only the top dental laboratories and ceramists to fabricate his porcelain veneers. Ideal results occur when a top clinician and technician work in harmony. A completed case is never a success unless the patient is happy.
